Snow Tube Safety
-
Wear suitable clothing! Blue Jeans is NOT a good idea. Wear waterproof pants and jacket with layered clothing underneath. Waterproof gloves and snow boots too. Fabric or knitted gloves are a bad idea! They may look nice, but once the snow melts through them, they are worthless. Remember, it is easy to discard layers if you get too warm. Have extra clothes on hand in case the ones you are wearing get wet.
-
It is a great idea to wear a helmet. Snow pack is hard! Also, if back country tubing, there may be obstacles!
-
Everyone should wear snow goggles. Not only do they stay on your head (especially if attached to a helmet), but they protect your eyes from snow blindness and keep you from getting headaches from the snow glare. They are also impact resistant. If snow goggles are not available, wear a good pair of UV protected sunglasses with impact resistant lenses. Look for Z87 imprinted on the frames if unsure if the lenses are impact resistant.
-
Wear sunscreen, even if it is cloudy! Make sure that the sunscreen has a high SPF. Re-apply frequently! Ears, nose, any exposed skin.
-
Drink plenty of liquids. Make sure that it is the right liquids! Beer and Red Bull does not count!
-
BE RESPONSIBLE! Think of Colorado's skiing code: those below you have the right of way. Before exiting the safety of your tube, make sure no one is heading your way. It is better to play bumper tubes than to have someone else barrel into you while you are standing. Also, be courteous to others.
-
Children: Watch them constantly. Stay close.
-
Weather: Watch the weather. Get out during lightning storms or high winds. Colorado is known for its sudden changes in weather. Do not let an unexpected snow storm catch you unprepared. River Tube Safety
-
Wear suitable footwear--river shoes or old tennis shoes. There are rocks and a slippery river bottom can be hazardous! Shoes are needed when entering and exiting the river.
-
It is a good idea to wear a helmet. The rocks are a lot harder than your noggin. Insure that the helmet fits properly, is not too loose or too tight, and all straps and buckles are in good shape and correctly fastened.
-
Everyone should wear a life jacket. Make sure the life jackets are not only Coast Guard Approved, but also rated for the right body weight and size. Do not go cheap on the Life Jackets!
-
Wear sunscreen or sun block for your river trip, even if it is cloudy! Make sure that the sunscreen has a high SPF and is waterproof. Re-apply frequently!
-
Remember to bring your UV protected sunglasses, hats or visors.
-
Drink plenty of liquids. Make sure that it is the right liquids! Beer and Red Bull does not count!
-
NO LIFEGUARDS: BE RESPONSIBLE! That includes being courteous to others.
-
Children: Watch them constantly, Stay close. You know how they get into everything around the house; now throw water into the equation.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR KEYS, house keys or valuables on the River. Keys don't float and Locksmiths are expensive!
-
DO NOT TAKE VALUABLES ON THE RIVER as most items sink and are never found. Again...always leave your keys with an attendant.
-
GLASS OR STYROFOAM IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! Broken glass cuts and Styrofoam is not good for the wildlife (not to mention it makes out waterways look ugly!)
-
DO NOT LITTER! Dispose of all trash properly. Dump all trash in designated receptacles. Help keep our rivers, parks and tubing streams beautiful!
